AGNEL JAN KALYAN strives towards Poverty Alleviation, through Participatory Enterprise, Health Care, Skill Training, Livelihood Education for life and Livelihood, and Employment Generation of the marginalized through People’s Participation
Jan Kalyan Kendra is a movement, an idea that wells up, from deep within us, and calls each of us to share what we have, so that our life becomes purposeful, and worth living. Here, at Agnel Jan Kalyan Kendra, we help each other to grow into that consciousness that drives us to look beyond ourselves and to reach out in solidarity with the marginalized through empowerment and livelihood education.
This is not an outfit or organization but a movement that invites all to participate and welcomes each who would like to share with others because he or she is provided with.
Poverty and inequality may or may not be man made, but mankind can and must address it, as an essential feature of its sense of identity, of being human. There is no justification for remaining indifferent to the plight of people around us, who live in sub-human conditions of poverty and ignorance, without any opportunity or apparent hope. The essence of being human, is being human, as the term itself indicates: FEEL, BE AWARE, and RESPOND to the needs of those who are less provided. We are driven by the teaching of Lord Jesus: “Love your neighbour as yourself” and the fundamental understanding of our existence as interdependent and intertwined. Our existence is qualified by how intensely we are engaged with those who need us. This predicament arises out of the fact that we are provided, and others are less so. We believe that people around us, who are less fortunate are somehow our responsibility, and we need to respond to that reality by reaching out to them, even if it demands that we give up something of what we have. Such an outreach is genuine when it is not patronising or when approached without an attitude of superiority or pity. We will walk together in solidarity and equality, because that is the call of the human heart.
Our primary mission therefore is to conscientize people about what each one of us can and must do, to be human; we will do this, not by giving doles to people who need help, which is far easier to do, but to go down the path or learning and struggling with them so that together we rise, in a genuine effort to empower others and in the process, empowering ourselves. Paulo Freire’s approach of – advocacy, adoption and immersion – are best suited for shared solidarity towards empowerment.
The world is waiting for each one of us to respond, and the cries of the needy and the disempowered will continue to be heard by those who are sensitive. As long as we are ready to respond, there are enough opportunities to be engaged and be partners of change that the world so sorely needs! OUR MISSION is to sound the bugle, that you and the world out there, may hear and join the movement!
As a small non-profit organization, running a School close to a neighbourhood that lives in stark contrast to those who attend our school, we have decided to break the mental and emotional walls that physically and mentally separated us, and to pitch ourselves amidst that large community in solidarity, and walk the talk that our belief on solidarity with the disadvantaged is more than just a belief, but something that belongs to our core. We also hope that our effort where our engagement with the disadvantaged, funded from our own meagre savings, and managed with people of all creeds and communities, is an invitation for others too to get engaged with their innate passion to live more than just for ‘ourselves’!
